Day 1 – Good morning from Puerto Rico!
Quick thoughts, and likely they are disjointed. We arose at 1:30 am on Wednesday morning to begin our Puerto Rican adventure. So…we landed in mid-afternoon and became settled into our Air BnB, a quick hello to the ocean, and off to the grocery store. By 5pm, were were exhausted and ready for dinner. I had my first Pina Colada (yes, I’m 66 and never had a Pina colada before), and an incredible sea food dinner at the local bar down the street. The bar reminded me of Catherine’s Bar in the British television show Death in Paradise.
We slept in this morning (thank you exhaustion, Pina colada, lovely meal, and a Sangria) to explore the beach. I had a small haul of sea glass. My friend Holly that I’m traveling with (HLSea and Beach Glass Jewelry) is amazed at the lack of glass on the beach this year. Meanwhile, I’m happily exploring the tideline and frolicking in the surf finding small bits of glass. James, my son, is always an amazing treasure hunter, and returned from his beach walk with a small handful of lovely pieces. He led me to some rocks where the waves whooshed in and it was a challenging game to grab a few pieces of glass. I thought immediately of Capt. Ky, (LC’s Glass), and his adventures around the Caribbean. Catch his incredible finds on YouTube (I can post links later). He has completed breathtaking and often dangerous forays into sea caves and high surf to get his glass. He has my greatest respect as I flounder among the small rocks near our stay to find the glass.
Other thoughts about Puerto Rico — The color of the ocean. It’s blue, and as the surf rolls in, it’a turquoise. It’s so very different from the gray of the Atlantic that I am used to. The sand is fine and silky. There are huge pelicans here. Holly said they are the sea gulls of Puerto Rico. I’ve tried to get pictures, but I’ve been too slow as I’ve in in the “Sea Glass Stoop” seeking treasures.
I don’t know where our adventures will lead today. I think we’re going to Erick’s Bakery who is the dad of our Air BnB host for breakfast. Our friend Sonia flys in this afternoon, and we’re heading to visit our Puerto Rican friends Ruben and Rosie. Ruben sells glass on EBay (Rubtoys), grows fruit, and coffee. If you’re looking for a sea glass guide to Puerto Rico, check out Nora Campanella’s book Sea Glass of Puerto Rico, A Journey to Discover an Island’s Hidden Treasures. It’s a memoir and a guide to the sea glass beaches in Puerto Rico. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
