I love supporting this organization and saving the seals!

The numbers are in! The 2024 Seal Season was the fifth busiest on record in Marine Mammal Stranding Center's 46-year history. 🦭The season kicked off early with the first patient of the season being admitted to their hospital on Christmas Day, and continued for eight months with the final rehabilitated seal being released on August 27th.

This year New Jersey experienced a large influx of recently weaned Grey seal pups during the months of February and March, who made up the majority of patients admitted. In addition to the young pups, juvenile and adult Grey, Harbor and Harp seals utilized the beaches as a rest stop while they traveled up and down the East Coast this spring. Their Stranding Staff and certified MMSC Stranding Volunteers stayed very busy monitoring resting seals, many of which were healthy animals just taking a break from the rigors of hunting. The Stranding Team needed to relocate 43 healthy seals from beaches crowded by too many humans or dogs. This season they also had four cases of seals entangled in marine debris, including lines, a gill net and even the plastic overwrap of a case of water. Fortunately, all four seals survived their injuries and were successfully returned to the wild.

With the end of seal season comes a very busy few months of projects that can only be accomplished when their hospital is empty. Currently the team is completing repairs and upgrades to the ICU and Pool House. Stranding equipment is being inspected and repairs made as needed. All of the trucks are getting much-needed maintenance completed, and they are already busy stocking up on supplies such as food, medicine and cleaning products to prepare for next seal season (the start of which is only a few months away).

I’m researching heavily for the forthcoming historical novel The Elen Chronicles. A synopsis: How far will a woman go to find her child? When the Redcoats take Elen’s daughter and best friend as prisoners of war in Scotland, Elen goes to great lengths to find them and bring them home. She seeks her daughter and friend through war-torn Scotland and battles prejudices about her healing gifts and being touted as a witch. Sources tell her they were exiled to America.

She journeys across the sea to continue seeking her daughter and friend. After years of searching and years of grief, Elen never gives up on hope. Years later, when the Redcoats come to America to fight another war, will Elen’s bitterness and anger keep her from using her gift of healing? Or will she forgive and find some peace?

This book is going to be a lot of fun to write, but require a good deal of research which will be enhanced if I can get back to Scotland. Follow my writing journey!
