Before the sun awakes is one of my favorite times of the day. My animal friends paw at me to put them outside for a few moments before coming inside for treats. The cat meows and knocks things around until fed. But once everyone has been out, given treats, or fed, they fall back into an easy slumber filled with dreams of birds and mice, of deer and toys where their dreams abound with moving paws, twitching tails, and muffled barks and meows.
The rest of the household is quiet too. Everyone else is sleeping, except for me. I am enjoying the sounds of the morning – the sounds of my sleeping two and four-legged family members. Outside, the birds are still asleep, but off in the distance, a train rumbles through the early morning hour.
In spring, summer, and early fall, the rumble of the train can be drowned out by the roar of the boat engines as other early birds are taking advantage of this quiet time of the day to zoom down the river and into the bay to catch fish, waking from their slow-moving slumber and feeding in the shallows to be caught on a hook and line.
This is a wonderful time of dreams and plans. Anything can be thought of, dreamed of, hoped for. It’s a wonderful, creative time, unencumbered by the thoughts and expectations of others. It’s a quiet, meditative time when one can settle into one’s own thoughts or perhaps be influenced by others’ thoughts in books and videos. And, I can wallow in creativity with no strings attached.
It’s a good time. Not a good time to be raucous, but a wonderful time to slowly ease into the joy of a new day. And when the sun comes up, and the birds begin to sing, it’s time to join the world once again. I am extremely grateful for this quiet time and the joy it brings.
