Words in My Head. Words in My Heart.
Words are crowd my head and my heart.
I am home in Maryland, but as the old song says, “My heart is in the Highlands.”
Scotland has also been part of an inner knowing that it is ‘home.’ I had a strong desire to visit the UK, and for many years, I wanted to live there. It was a bit different from being an Anglophile. The UK, and particularly Scotland, have always had a tether to my heart. I remember this from when I was very young with my earliest memories of wanting to be in the UK since I was six or seven.
Many of us talk about ‘going down the rabbit hole’ or ‘doom-scrolling’ when on social media. There’s a similar effect when one is researching topics. Each bit of information leads to another bit, until you are spinning away in different directions, researching different threads, each one making your research richer.
In researching the 18th century, I’ve been researching what my character Elen would have worn in 1746 Scotland and 1777 America. It’s been an interesting journey. I’ve come to wonder how it would feel to wear the period clothing.
